Shortly after being discharged from the Marine Corps, Tom went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration as an Air Traffic Controller. While working as a controller, one of his co-workers children was diagnosed with Leukemia. Tom organized a charity golf tournament to assist the family with their medical costs. Shortly thereafter Tom joined the Marty Lyons Foundation as a board member and Suffolk County Chapter President, on Long Island. A friend of his started a new airline called JetBlue and Tom came to him with an idea he had to change the way charity golf tournaments were conducted, mainly the hole in one component.
